Amilcare Ponchielli composed the Symphony for piano four hands in the years when he was a student at the Conservatory in Milan, and it is the piano version of a work which also exists for orchestra or band.
Ponchielli wrote only three other works for piano four hands, but these are Divertissements on Operas by Mercadante, Donizetti and Verdi, while this Symphony is completely based on original material by the author. This composition has only one movement, as the traditional Symphonies and Ouvertures for Operas. [...]
