IGNAZ PLEYEL: COMPLETE PIANO SONATAS VOL.1

...You will find them worth the trouble. They are very well written and most pleasing to listen to.
You will also see at once who was his master.
Well, it will be a lucky day for music if later on Pleyel should be able to replace Haydn
(Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to his father about Pleyel's Quartets, 1784).

The great success that Pleyel's music had at its time is now hard to believe, after two centuries of almost complete oblivion, and when we are used to considering Pleyel first as a piano maker rather than as a
composer. But Pleyel's music enjoyed a great popularity in those days, and with such a diffusion that escaped the control of the author himself, who more than once went on a rampage because of the many pirated editions
circulating everywhere and for some licenses that publishers were taking without his permission.
Pleyel was paradoxically the one who earned less with his music, and this must have weighed heavily in his decision to abandon forever the role of composer to become a publisher himself and, later still, a piano maker.
